Wind, sleet and snow whipped the East End beaches. The fall striped bass run never materialized. Yet, from sun up to sundown,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/TheFaithful2Trio-1.jpg\">The Faithful<\/a>\u2014\u00a0my rod-and-reel surf companions&#8211;persevered, despite the absence of anything large enough to seriously bend their rods, or to bring home for the table. And I too, one raw and fateful December morning, suited up in pursuit of late season Christmas bass. It would be my last call before the final curtain rang down for the year. Good question. Allow me to explain the little known, rarely invoked, but totally legal &#8220;Christmas Cookie Clause&#8221;.<a href=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/?attachment_id=3315\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3315\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3315\" src=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/ChristmasCookieClause.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a> The fine print implicitly allows that, should the BW overwhelm all horizontal surfaces of the kitchen, dining room and adjacent living room, with materiel and accoutrement of baking, including but not limited to flour, sugar, butter, chocolate, sprinkles of red, green or various other colors, etc., the aforementioned surfcaster is free to abandon the premises and ply his avocation at the beach.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3306\" style=\"width: 177px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/?attachment_id=3306\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3306\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3306\" class=\"wp-image-3306 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatLastFishBilly-e1513139670925-167x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatLastFishBilly-e1513139670925-167x300.jpg 167w, http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatLastFishBilly-e1513139670925-768x1382.jpg 768w, http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatLastFishBilly-e1513139670925-569x1024.jpg 569w, http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatLastFishBilly-e1513139670925.jpg 1018w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>GET AWAY FISH:<\/strong> Billy Black&#8217;s 22-inch fish was King Rat of the day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thus, spurred further by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/BillyTackleShop2013.jpg\">Billy Black&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0Friday evening report of his 21-inch striper\u2014\u201cbest fish I&#8217;ve had in weeks!!!\u201d, he text bragged\u2014I whipped up a couple of steak-and-eggs breakfast burritos, fortified a mug of hot coffee with Scotch whiskey, and <b><i>away to the shore I flew like a flash.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>On a favorite beach just west of the East Hampton town line, <b><i>Billy in sneakers, and I in my waders, settled our brains for some early winter\u2019s casts<\/i><\/b>. Sea and sky were nearly indistinguishable in cold and gloomy alternating shades of gray. Wind chills were in the low 30s. But in short order, <b><i>what to my wondering eyes should appear,<\/i><\/b> Billy\u2019s rod all aflutter. <b><i>I knew in a moment it must be a bass. <\/i><\/b>Indeed, there were fish. Not many; Not big by any means\u201412 to 20 inches on average.\u00a0 But enough that we could ignore the freezing rain stinging our cheeks, and the weird looks we got from dog walkers parading by bundled in fleece and down.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3305\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/?attachment_id=3305\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3305\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3305\" class=\"wp-image-3305 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatFred-e1513139486766-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatFred-e1513139486766-188x300.jpg 188w, http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RatFred-e1513139486766.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>LAST CALL:<\/strong> The thrill of which will have to last long into 2018.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><i>And then, in a twinkling,<\/i><\/b> came a fish call from <a href=\"http:\/\/fishtales.abatemarco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Image-9.jpg\">World Famous Mel<\/a>, she, always <b>so lively and quick<\/b>. We were lured east to the Georgica cut where a rat patrol of six other stalwarts was casting as hard and far as their 11-foot rods would allow, as\u00a0<b><i>visions of big bass danced in their heads.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Alas, the best any of us could do was a 22-inch fish.\u00a0 This schoolie proved to be Billy\u2019s getaway fish, topping off a half dozen for his morning. I stuck around for a few frigid minutes more, vowing not to end my season on an empty cast, but to go out with a catch\u2014no matter how small.\u00a0I was using some of my lightest gear, so all my fish this morning came inside the sandbar, sometimes as close as the last curl of the wave. My third fish <b><i>hit with a jerk and I laughed when it did, in spite of myself<\/i><\/b>. <b><i>I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work:<\/i><\/b> silently savoring the subtle chatter of my rod tip. \u00a0As it gently twerked. I reeled slowly, lightly, encouraging the feeble vibrations of this tiny fish to radiate up my arms as long as possible.\u00a0 This \u201cfish on\u201d feeling, subdued though it was, would have to last me deep into 2018.
